7 Things I Learned From Houdini

By April 4, 2017 Danny Ray Blog

1. Make Everything Life or Death: Set out to achieve your goals as if your life depended on it. Houdini was constantly doing death-defying feats. If death is on the line you will do whatever it takes to survive. Make your goals so meaningful and then do whatever it takes to achieve them.

Deuteronomy 30:19
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,

2. Think Inside The Box: I have learned a lot from Houdini over the years. I have done numerous escapes, the most famous being Houdini’s Milk Can Escape. Literally you are submerged in water and you have to think inside the can of a way to escape. There are numerous times things did not go according to plan but because I had one simple goal—Get Out Alive!—I did. Learn to think inside the box. There is always a way out.

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

3. Houdini Attempted The Impossible: Houdini wasn’t looking to do easy stunts. He was looking to do something completely impossible. Your goals shouldn’t be so easy that you can achieve them without prayer and without God’s guidance. Your goals should be prayed about, thought about and then sought after.

Luke 18:27
Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

4. Go To The Grave With Your Secrets: Houdini guarded his secrets carefully. His secrets would perserve his job, his sanity and even his life. Use the hidden gems (your talents, your gifting, your personality) God has given you to accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God. Secretly bless people. Secretly serve people. Secretly pray for others.

Matthew 6:4
Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

5. Failure is Not An Option: Always have a backup. Because death was on the line “failure was not an option.” Failuremeant death. If the goal is from God, He will eventually open a way for you to succeed. Don’t ever give up!

Proverbs 24:16
The righteous may fall seven times but still get up, but the wicked will stumble into trouble.

6. Become The Handcuff King: Houdini became an expert at picking any and every handcuff. He was constantly learning how to pick new locks. If you are going to reach your God-given goals, you need to constantly be learning your craft.

Colossians 3:23
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

7. Never Done Before: Don’t just go after goals that are easily attainable. Houdini was always attempting things “never done before.” God has bigger dreams for you than you could ever imagine. Go after God-sized dreams and goals. God wants to do amazing things through you, things “never done before.” You are His unique child. He has marked out the plans for you. Your job is to constantly discover the goals that God has for you.

What goals do you want to achieve this year? In the next 2 years? 5 years?
