“I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life . . .” -Henry David Thoreau
If you’re like most people in today’s complex and fast-paced society, you’re constantly trying to keep up with all of the to-do lists at work and at home so that you hardly have time to enjoy life. Therefore, trying to inspire others might not even be on your radar. Sometimes we need to slowdown and make sure that we are creating great things. We need to slow down and make sure that we are not just robotically moving through life. We need to slow down and make sure that we are enjoying every seamless, picture-perfect moment as we run our race. The beauty is when we are “living deep and sucking all the marrow out of life,” our life becomes contagious and inspiring, sometimes without us even being aware!
How often do you think a great chef hears the customers say, ‘That was the best steak ever?’ Probably not very often. I can’t remember ever going into the kitchen and telling the chef that his food was amazing. Yet at my next barbecue I might buy that chef’s “special sauce” hoping to create the perfect steak just like he did. So whether he knows it or not, his effort to create a great steak inspired someone to try to be like him—to make food that people love. Somehow, watching people be the best they can be, doing the best they can do, inspires me. Their passion and effectiveness moves me to action and it becomes, both consciously and subconsciously, the catalyst for my own creativity.
Years ago, one of my best friends, Joe Castañeda, was working through an online personal growth challenge. During that time, he wrote a blog for each day, sharing the insights he was getting from the program. He told me that on any given day, he would have 10 to 15 readers on his blog, plus 5 to 10 who were “following” via e-mail. Not a big following by any stretch of the imagination and certainly not the kind of numbers that could change the world…
…Hold on a minute. You might imagine how shocked Joe was when he got a call from his mom one Sunday afternoon. Apparently, in her church, one of the teachers was using Joe’s blog about personal growth as the framework for a class he was teaching. While Joe’s readership was only 15 to 25 people, one of those individuals was using Joe’s material to inspire 15 to 20 more people. Joe had no clue, but the simple act of blogging about his own growth had almost doubled its influence because one man was inspired by Joe’s journey. How many others were being touched by that blog not directly through Joe, but from those Joe was inspiring? When you live out your design, others are inspired and, like a falling row of dominos, your inspiration touches someone else which then stimulates more inspiration in others and so on in a linear sequence that could very easily circumnavigate the world!
Here’s my challenge for you today: run your race with passion and purpose and watch your energy become contagious. In some cases, you may never hear about the positive effect that your progressive actions have had, but trust me, you’ll feel it. And sometimes, if you’re as lucky as my buddy Joe, your mom will call you up and tell you how proud she is that you are her son.
The best way to create that inspiration to help others in their race is for you to be who you are designed to be, doing what you are designed to do. You are inspiring!
Run Your Race
Be yourself. Be great. Inspire others.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
